How the Offshore Is Doing on Its 30th Year Anniversary
The Royal Oak Offshore is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with some exciting new references that are performing well in the market and other old models that are making a comeback.
When the Royal Oak Offshore was first unveiled at Baselworld 1993, the story goes that Gerald Genta burst into the Audemars Piguet booth shouting that his watch had been ruined.
Indeed, the chunkier proportions had not immediately won everyone over. Such an out-of-the-box design needs time to gain acceptance, especially in a world as traditionalist as watchmaking.
Audemars in this has been very far-sighted by focusing on this model, which over the years has proved to be such a huge success that it celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2023.
The importance of this watch can be seen by the fact that, together with the Royal Oak, it has been the collection that dragged Audemars into the secondary market with so many references that have registered high growth percentages, including the one you see in the chart below.
In this case, the graph draws a very strong upward trajectory from 2021 to 2022 and then a stabilization phase at high levels that continues to the present. Interestingly, this model has hardly felt the very large period of decline that has instead affected the vast majority of watches, including many Offshores.
To date the market price is over 100k and is +151% higher than the original list price which is about €41,700.
These are very high returns as those that are also affecting another model: the new 26238CE.OO.1300CE.01, a black ceramic chronograph introduced just this year.
This is the first time Audemars has made an Offshore with both a ceramic case and bracelet and the result and outcome is truly remarkable.
The first sales ads have recently appeared and as is to be expected the prices are very high and hover between €140k - €113k, +59% - +28% over the list price of €88,100, not bad returns if we think that much of the market is in the doldrums. Obviously these are supply-only figures and are affected by the hype of the novelty, which is why they may tend to go lower in the coming months, as is often the case with watches that appear on the market. In any case, it is still information that shows strong interest around this new reference.
To complete the analysis of the Offshore on our Instagram page we made a comparison of three models with rose gold case and black bezel.
Over the past year prices have dropped around -16%, however in the last three months we are seeing a slowing of the descent and in some cases even a rebound.
Another interesting thing to note is that the more modern the watch, the higher its price is in the market.
We don't know if Audemars has any other novelties planned for the end of 2023, but even if it is not this year, the house has always accustomed us to great experimentation on this collection so we will see how it will surprise us in the future.
