The watch market is constantly evolving, and in an effort to provide you with increasingly accurate tools to analyze it we recently launched our indexes.
This is the result of months and months of work aimed at trying to provide you with indexes that can truthfully and correctly represent the market situation.
In addition to our great commitment to the accuracy of the data we show on our website every day, we have worked a lot on our internal database so that it is possible to classify watches in several modes thus managing to come up with indexes that are very different from each other.
The benchmark index is definitely the WA50. It is a selection of the 50 most popular and influential watches on the market selected with the help of our database.
WA50 wants to provide a representation of how the whole second-hand market is performing and for this reason considers within it a very heterogeneous set of watches ranging from the great classics such as the Daytona, Royal Oak or Nautilus to more niche models by brands such as Moser, Lange and Chopard.
As can be seen, the market had a huge surge, doubling in value from October 2020 to January 2022, in about a year and a half the yield was 100 percent. From about March 2022 until the end of last year, on the other hand, there was a rapid decline in prices that stopped with the beginning of 2023.
Interestingly, however, this period of decline has not cancelled out all of the growth generated, but in the last few months of stabilization, the market continues to price at higher figures than those recorded pre-October 2022.
As mentioned earlier, from early 2023 onward the market has entered a period of stabilization that is very different from the great rallies of past years.
This new phase is also evidenced by Audemars35, the index that selects the 35 most popular watches of the Swiss watchmaker.
Audemars35 has one characteristic: it is the best performing index from October 2020 to the present, with a return of about 88% over the past 3 years.
As can be seen from the graph, the price descent ends just as the new year arrives, and throughout 2023 the price has remained around 100k.
In addition to general market indexes and indexes by brand, we also created indexes by material such as WASteel25 or WAGold5 and indexes by model such as Daytona15.
The Daytona is the most traded and popular model ever, in recent years it has certainly been one of the top performers not only among Rolexes but within the entire second-hand market.
However as you can see from the chart this watch is also experiencing a stabilization phase similar to what we saw with Audemars35.
So many models are coming out of the last year with sharp drops in price, for example the 116500LN had reached 48k in March 2022 while today it is being sold for about 30k, still 111% more than its retail.
Those proposed in this article are only 3 of the 27 indexes we have proposed and which you can find by clicking here.
We are working on many new things so that we can give you more and more secondary market analysis tools.
The journey has just begun.
